In this article, we will help you better understand moxibustion, its types, use, benefits, and other indications so you can make more informed decisions about your health care.

What is moxibustion?

Moxibustion is a healing practice that originated in China over 2,500 years ago.

The goal of moxibustion treatment is to bring your body into balance and increase the flow of Qi. Qi is the energy that flows in our body.

This balance can be achieved by burning the moxa close to or directly on the skin. Moxa is nothing but dried mugwort which can be obtained from the plant leaves.

Moxibustion can trigger an increase of blood flow to the pelvic area especially the uterus. This is why it is often used to treat uterine cramps and scanty menstruation. It may also be indicated for breech babies.

When performed by a skilled and experienced practitioner, moxibustion can help stimulate inactively stagnated qi with the amplification of therapeutic heat.

Types of Moxibustion

Usually, there are two types of moxibustion treatment. 1. Direct Moxibustion and 2. Indirect Moxibustion. Both methods have their own uses, benefits, and drawbacks depending on the clinic’s and patient’s preferences.

Direct Moxibustion:

As the name suggests, direct moxibustion involves direct contact of moxa with the skin.

Direct moxibustion starts by burning a small amount of the dried leaves of a plant on relevant acupoints.

People who tried direct moxibustion address a warming sensation in the clinic. However, some of them have reported a temporary stinging sensation too.

Indirect Moxibustion:

This is the most practiced moxibustion type In the US. Indirect moxibustion is generally carried out in multiple ways.

In the first method, the practitioner burns one end of a moxa stick and holds it close to the treatment area for a few minutes until the area turns red.

The second method involves using both acupuncture needles and moxa. First, of all, an acupuncture needle is inserted into the acupuncture point and preserved for some time.

Second, the top portion of the needle wrapped with moxa and ignited, which is responsible to generate heat in the acupoint and the surrounding area.

Lastly, once the patient experiences relief, the moxa is annihilated and the needle is taken out.

Like acupuncture, the healing properties of moxibustion have been supported by a good amount of clinical research to date. I believe that, with increased awareness of this ancient therapy, even more studies will soon be looking into its uses and mechanisms.

Moxibustion may be especially useful for people who have not seen adequate results with other treatments. It is therefore recommended for those who are still suffering from a variety of health issues after trying both conventional and alternative therapies. I often provide patients in my practice with moxa rolls and demonstrate how to treat themselves at home. Like with many traditional Chinese treatments, consistent, the sustained application is key.

As always, I suggest looking for experienced practitioners of Chinese medicine who are willing to work with a wide array of modalities at their disposal, including moxibustion.
